In order to be a part of the same church that Jesus built, we must keep
the same doctrines that he taught, as the early church did. Jesus said in Matthew 16:18 “And I say also unto thee, that thou art
Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall
not prevail against it.” Notice He said, “I
will build” not “we will” leaving Peter (man) out of the planning and building. This means that Jesus himself
would be the architect—they are His doctrines—therefore, they are not
optional or subject to change. Matthew 7:28-29, "And it came to
pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his
doctrine: For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the
scribes." When Jesus came and set forth His gospel, it was done
with authority and no person on earth nor any angel from heaven has any
higher authority to change it. Paul said that if anyone, even an
angel from heaven, tries to preach any other gospel to you, then let him be
accursed. This may sound very strong but it is a very clear warning
to all that think that they can alter the word of God to fit their preference
of church. The
Apostle Paul exhorts us in 1 Timothy 4:13-16, "Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to
doctrine. Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee
by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the
presbytery. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them;
that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and
unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save
thyself, and them that hear thee." 2 Timothy 3:16-17, "All
scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for
reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God
may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works."
