Tangancicuaro De Arista

A view of Tangancicuaro De Arista

Brother Jose de Jesus Herrera Vargas
Minister of the Church of God at Michoacan, Mexico.

It is truly wonderful to see how the Lord sets things, time, and people in motion.  And if we all submit to the will of the Lord, all things will work for His glory.

As Brother Carlos and Brother Jeremiah were out witnessing one Saturday morning last October, they were about to finish up when they came across four mobile homes.

“It’s your turn to knock” said Brother Jeremiah.

So Brother Carlos proceeded to knock, until he noticed that it was vacant. Then, they went to the other three and found them to be the same.

"Let’s leave the church invitations on the door" Brother Jeremiah said.  "Maybe someone will move in and find them."

So we did.

We thought that that was the end of that, but God was just putting the parts of His wonderful plan together.  In November, three or four weeks later, on a Monday afternoon, Brother Carlos received a call from a number that he did not recognize and to his surprise a Spanish young man asked if he could speak with pastor Carlos Gonzalez.  The young man introduced himself as a temporary worker that had just arrived from Mexico and that he and his co-workers had found an invitation from the church and would like to meet with someone from the church.

Brother Carlos called Brother Jeremiah and told him, "I received a call from some of the workers at the trailers, will you go with me?" So Brother Carlos picked up Brother Jeremiah, and with no clue what they would run into, they knocked on the door.

One of the young men was waiting for them so they went in.  "We don't have much furniture," they said.So they all met in one of the bedrooms, which was neat and well-kept.  "Please sit here on our beds," they said. Two of them sat on the floor.

Brother Carlos introduced Brother Jeremiah and himself to them. He asked what part of Mexico they were from, and more importantly, what were their religious backgrounds.  They all professed that they where Christians and attended a Baptist church back in Mexico.  Then Brother Carlos opened the Bible and began to read to them from 1 John chapters 3 and 5, which clearly tells us that if we have sin in our hearts we cannot be in fellowship with the Father, and how false religion has deceived many into thinking that God's grace will cover them even if they continue sinning.

The first key scripture was the following:

We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not (1 John 5:1) and He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8).

The exhortation was that if there was any sin, Jesus came to destroy the work that the devil had done in their lives so that they may have a new one, and that God could give them the power to live a holy life.  Brother Jeremiah gave his testimony, saying, "this person you see here with a Bible in his hand was not always this way."  He began to back up the exhortation by telling them about the great change that God had made in his life and how ever since he gave his life to the Lord, God has never failed him.

An invitation was made to all that wanted to renounce that life of sin. And one by one, (there were five of them), they knelt and began to ask God to forgive them for all their sins.   What a glorious moment it was for Brother Carlos and Brother Jeremiah to be able to lead each one to the Lord!

Immediately, you could tell that there was a difference in them!  They themselves said that they felt as if a heavy load had been lifted up.  Brother Carlos asked, "So how did you get a hold of my number?"  And one of the young men pulled from his wallet a torn and faded out invitation and said, "I found it close by here, laying on the ground, two weeks after we arrived here, and it had been rained on and torn." Brother Carlos was touched to see that he kept it folded up in his wallet.

A few days later, on Thanksgiving Day, Brother Jeremias and Sister Mandi went to visit the new converts to bring them some food and a microwave.  There was another young man there, Jesus, the brother of one of the new converts. He had just arrived from Mexico and had been sent to a different field in Dover, about 6 or 7 miles away.  He had heard that his brother and one of his closest friends had given their lives to the Lord, and when Brother Jeremiah spoke to him he just dropped right down on the floor and gave his life to the Lord as well.

Brother Carlos and Brother Jeremiah continued to visit the new brothers weekly, and it was always in their hearts to be with the saints and in all the services they could.  They had to work very hard on their knees seven days a week from sunup to sundown, but when God would send heavy rain on a Sunday, work would be canceled and they would call to be picked up for service.  Even though they could not make most Sunday morning services, they would call every Sunday evening asking for Brother Carlos and Brother Jeremiah to come to their trailers and hold services among the strawberry fields.  Many would come and hear the word preached.

It wasn’t long before it was obvious that the spirit of God was upon Brother Jose de Jesus. The hunger for truth and the desire to share with everyone that God wants holiness from His people was evident as he would daily speak to everyone in the surrounding trailers that God has a better way for them if they leave their old ways and follow God.

Months passed, and it was time to tell them that there was a second work of grace and that if we surrender ourselves as a living sacrifice, God will remove the carnal nature and we will be filled with the Holy Spirit and receive power to live a victorious life.  This was music to their ears and that same night Brother Jose de Jesus asked to have hands laid on him, and he and his friend Brother Jesus were sanctified.  It was then that Brother Jose de Jesus expressed that he had a calling to the lost. He expressed that in the church he went to in his hometown, there are people that don’t know that God has a better way and that one can live a holy life before the Lord every day.  He felt that he could proclaim this gospel in his home town.  So Brother Carlos told him to "seek the Lord like you have never sought him, tell him that you want to be sure of His calling."  And from time to time Brother Carlos would ask him, "how do you feel?"  His answer was always the same, that "God has brought me here for a special reason, and now I know what it is."

You see, Brother Jose de Jesus told Brother Carlos that he had not planned on coming to the United States this year to work.  He had come in previous years and he didn’t want to come this time around, but at the last minute he felt something within tell him "you need to go, something special is waiting for you."  That something special was not Brother Carlos or Brother Jeremiah, but it was the light of God that would illuminate his path to all Truth.

On April 21, all the migrant workers were gathered together and were told that the harvest was slowing down and that they would have to start sending workers home.  The caretaker asked everyone to draw names, and Brother Jose de Jesus was selected to return back to his family.  It was a very sad moment for all who had come to know such a humble, loving Brother with such a great burden to work in the kingdom of God.

Therefore, Brother Carlos asked him one last time, "How do you feel?"  His answer was the same, "God brought me here to receive this truth, the great light, and the Lord wants me to preach it to my home town."  Brother Carlos felt that the hand of God was upon him and that he should be ordained as a minister.  On April 23, 2008 we had a special service and Brother Jose de Jesus was ordained.  We gave God all the glory and thanksgiving for what he had done and for what we see in the horizon for a city called Tangancicuaro de Arista in the state of Michoacan, Mexico.

Brother Carlos, Brother Jeremias, and Brother Clowers pray for Brother Jesus as well.  He will be returning to Michoacan soon and will be assisting Brother Jose de Jesus with the work there.

Although these brothers are loved by all, they are especially dear to Blaise.  Oblivious to the fact that they do not understand his English, he has spent a great deal of time talking to them.  They  just smile at him so lovingly, that he refuses to believe they do not understand him.  And you know what, maybe just maybe, they do...

On Thursday April 24th, Brother Jose de Jesus boarded the bus for the three-day journey back home, but he did not leave discouraged.  He told Brother Carlos that he was ready to begin what God had shown him in his stay in the U.S.  He arrived Saturday to his wife and little daughter, and thank the Lord that his wife was immediately in full support of his calling and has embraced the light.

On Sunday, April 27th, in his hometown, he held the first Church of God service in his house and witnessed to his wife concerning sanctification and the need to have the carnal nature removed through the Holy Spirit by laying on of hands, and she expressed the desire to be sanctified that very morning.

Please remember Brother Jose de Jesus in your prayers, as he takes the plow and works the fields, but this time it's not the strawberry fields, but the field of souls.

Praise the Lord. Gloria Dios.

At the closing of the ordination service, brother Jose de Jesus prayed and gave God thanks for showing and bringing him to all truth, and asked the Lord to lead and guide him.
